Dear Christian Educator and Interested Party to TMICA Textbook Project,

Greetings from Guinea and Merry Christmas.

I know it is a busy time of year for you all and you are all doing many things, so I wanted to give you our TMICA project outline of goals and needs now and hopefully, when you have some time later, you can contribute.

I have attached an MS Word file that has the basics of what we need. Please feel free to share with your colleagues you may be interested as well.

It is very basic and you will undoubtedly have questions and need clarification. Please email.

Thank you again for your interest and help in this project.

If you would like to be removed from this list, please let me know and I apologize for adding you to a group email list.

If you would like more information on TMICA you can email me, look us up on the web at www.teachusmission.org, or look me up on facebook under Chris H Lee, Upland High Class of 1989

Sincerely, Chris Lee

TMICA Textbook Project Outline 21 Dec 2009

Overall Goal:

Produce a 30 Week curriculum focusing on Language Arts and Math for the 6th grade level and 3rd grade level equivalent based on California standards.

Each week consists of 5 days a week.

Each day has 3 main periods of about 45 minutes each, 2 periods for language arts and 1 period for math.

Each day’s lesson should also have homework and a weekly assessment.

Each thematic unit will also require a unit assessment and a cumulative midterm and final assessment.

30 weeks X 5 days = 150 days of lessons.

150  X (2 Language Arts (LA) + 1 Math) = 300 LA lessons of 45 minutes and 150 Math lessons of 45 minutes. Each lesson will require a daily homework. We hope to give about 2 hours to 3 hours of homework a day.

We hope to produce two work books, one for language arts, and one for math that will contain the daily lesson, the daily homework, the various assessments, and the various appendices, reading, and support material all contained in the workbook.

Language Arts

English is a foreign language to our students. EFL/ESL approach is desired. Ideally, I would like a weekly dialog and reading that is level appropriate which shows key target language in its natural context. Based on this, we can learn vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and work on all the language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing.

Ideally, we would like thematic units and build language in a logical order, starting with basic concepts and working our way up to more complex ones.

Math

This part is a bit easier. We can more or less use regular materials in the US, but we need to adapt a little for cultural context, especially math word problems.

What I Need Most

Good and appropriate readings and language arts/ESL/EFL materials to base lessons on and also any good books, that may already have this. A model of what I am trying to get is sort of like Jack Richards, Interchange Series. If we can produce something like that but more expanded and level appropriate for 3rd and 6th grade, it would be quite an achievement.

Various Formats

We need digital versions of various assignments preferably in MS Word format or PDF Scans. Also any lessons with audio or visual or computer programs would be great.

Textbooks and materials can also be donated. I will be in the Southern California area in late February so I can pick them up from you. If you do not live in the Southern California Area, you can mail materials to my house there.

a full list is pending.

Deadlines

We will need a final draft in either MS Word format or PDF Format by early June to send to the printers in Guinea to print in time for June 28th. That leaves only 5 months to finish this project.
